Now that you've purchased that perfect barbeque grill and started entertaining friends and family in your backyard, you may also want to think about how you can maximize the use of your new equipment. If you take care of your grill, you can get consistently high quality cooking results for many years. A simple maintenance routine can help keep your barbeque looking great and working perfectly. Even though there are many different types of grills on the market, all need the same fundamental care and maintenance.

The first step to ensuring a well-maintained grill is ensuring you have the necessary equipment to perform your routine tasks. This includes a brass wire brush, some steel wool pads (soap impregnated works best), a sponge, dish soap, spray cooking oil, aluminum foil, and baking soda. Once you've located these items, you may want to consider keeping them in a single location so you have your grill maintenance kit already assembled when you need it, making it more convenient.

The most basic element of grill maintenance is ensuring you give it a good brush down after every use. This will prevent build-up that becomes harder to remove in the future. Anytime you want an extra fine polish, you can use baking soda as a scrubbing element, which helps break down residue. Some people have also found lightly rubbing the metal surfaces with aluminum foil creates a nice polish.

You'll want to pay special attention to the grill racks. Since this is where food comes in contact with the grill, it has the potential to get the most buildup if not taken care of properly. Of course, the normal brushing routine should apply to the racks, but you should also take the time to clean it with water and dish soap. This is where steel wool can really come in handy to work off the caked-on debris. After scrubbing, make sure you thoroughly rinse off any cleaning agent.

Finally, after you have brushed and cleaned all of your grill surfaces, you should spray them down with cooking oil, which prevents rusting. If you leave your grill outdoors, you should ensure it is covered so it doesn't get any weathering damage. Taking the time to clean your grill after every event and also an occasional deep clean will help protect your investment. More importantly, though, it will give you consistent high-quality results as you prepare food for your friends and family.
